Material Apparatus
This project formed part of a sequence of experiments exploring survival architecture constructed from found objects. The project investigated how architecture might operate as a self-sufficient system, addressing essential conditions of habitation including atmospheric control, waste disposal, and the production and storage of water and food. As part of this project, a weather-monitoring station, materials-fabrication apparatus, and survival shelter were developed alongside a series of experiments in material recycling and reuse.
The material apparatus explored the potential of chemically transforming asbestos waste into calcium carbonate for use in cementitious materials. Constructed from found objects, the self-contained processing unit also investigated the fractal qualities of architectural form generated through its repeated mechanical elements.
