Trompe-l'œil
Taking inspiration from Dutch Renaissance trompe-l’œil paintings, I produced a series of wood-panel arrangements composed of imitation letters, maps, feathers, photographs, specimens, and other fragments of imagined ephemera. The works explored collecting as a means of aesthetic pursuit, weathering objects to deliberately obscure their fabrication and authenticity. This continued my broader interest in aestheticised artifice and prop objects resulting from the cinematisation of culture. More specifically, I was interested in how objects, images, and architectural fragments can reauthorise authenticity through the construction of convincing impressions of pasts that may never have existed.
