Petite Porch

Virtual 2023

This simple porch design follows the classical concept of the ‘aedicule’, an opening defined by two columns supporting an entablature. The aedicule represents a fundamental unit of the classical architectural module.

The design is composed principally of two Doric pilasters supporting a pointed pediment, with the proportions developed to fit within the circumference of a circle. The proportions follow the methods outlined by James Gibbs in his 1728 folio, On Architecture. A series of rendered images were produced to explore the design, with particular emphasis placed on weathering, materiality, and the effects of age on the classical form.
